Your first visit to West Orange Dental Studio takes about two hours, and your cleaning is included in that time. You’ll be welcomed and checked in, have a full-mouth 3D digital scan, sit for an unhurried exam with Dr. Little, receive a cleaning suited to the health of your gums, and then review what we found and build a plan together. Nothing beyond that visit begins until you’ve seen the plan and its fees in writing.
We’re preparing to open our Oakland, FL studio in fall 2026, so this is a preview of what will happen when you come in once our books open. We’d rather you know exactly what the first visit looks like before you ever walk through the door.
How Long Does the First Visit Take
Plan for about two hours. That’s longer than many people expect, and it’s deliberate. A first visit is where we learn your mouth, your history, and what matters to you, and that isn’t something worth rushing. Because the cleaning happens in the same appointment, you leave with your teeth cleaned and a clear picture of your oral health rather than needing to come back for part two.
The studio itself is built for that pace. Our approach to care is calm, personal, and unhurried, in a studio with warm materials and natural light that feels more like a wellness space than a clinic.
Before Your First Visit: What to Prepare
A little preparation makes the visit smoother and gives Dr. Little more to work with.
Send Your Benefits Card, or Ask About Membership
If you have dental insurance, text or email a photo of your benefits card, and we’ll verify it before your first visit and show you what your plan actually pays. We’re in network with many PPO dental plans. Plans differ even within a single carrier, so we check your actual plan rather than the company name, and if we’re out of network with yours, you’re still welcome, since out-of-network benefits usually still pay a meaningful share. Our guide to whether insurance covers cosmetic dentistry explains what plans typically include and exclude.
If you don’t have dental insurance, you don’t need it to be cared for here. Our in-house membership plan is built for exactly that: one yearly price, payable monthly, that covers your exams, two cleanings, x-rays, fluoride, oral cancer screenings, and an emergency exam, plus 10 percent off other treatment. There’s no deductible, no annual maximum, and no waiting period. You can join over the phone before you come in or at the visit itself, and it starts the same day, so your first exam, x-rays, and cleaning are already covered. Our explainer on how dental savings plans work compares it with insurance. We don’t accept Medicaid.
List Your Medications and Health Conditions
Your general health shapes your dental care more than most people realize. Bring a current list of medications, including supplements, along with any health conditions, allergies, and recent surgeries. Blood thinners, diabetes, osteoporosis medications, pregnancy, and joint replacements or heart conditions where your physician has recommended antibiotics before dental care are all worth mentioning up front.
Bring Prior X-Rays or Request Your Records
Recent x-rays and records from your previous dentist help Dr. Little see how things have changed over time. Ask your last office to send them digitally before your visit, along with the date of your last cleaning, any gum measurements they recorded, and details of any treatment in progress. If you’ve just moved here, our welcome page for new neighbors walks through settling in.
Tell Us If Dental Visits Make You Anxious
Dental anxiety is common, and it’s much easier to plan around when we know about it ahead of time. Many procedures are comfortable with local anesthetic alone, and we also offer two comfort options:
- Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes, so you can drive yourself home.
- Minimal oral sedation is a single tablet taken about an hour before your appointment, and it requires a driver both ways.
Dr. Little is certified in both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, and he’ll talk through which option, if any, fits your visit.
What Happens at Your First Visit, Step by Step
Here’s the sequence, in the order it happens when you come in.
1. A Warm Welcome and Check-In
We’ll greet you, get you comfortable, and check you in. You’ll receive our Notice of Privacy Practices, and this is a good moment to hand over anything you brought or mention anything you forgot to send.
2. A Full-Mouth 3D Digital Scan
Instead of impression trays, we use an iTero digital scanner. It captures a complete 3D model of your teeth and maps your bite, revealing problem areas in three dimensions. There’s no goopy impression material, and you can watch the model build on screen in real time, which makes it easier to see what we’re talking about later.
3. An Unhurried Exam With Dr. Little
Next comes a thorough, unhurried exam with Dr. Little of your teeth and gums. He looks at existing fillings and crowns, signs of decay or wear, gum health, your bite, and the soft tissues of your mouth. This is also the time to raise anything that’s been bothering you, from sensitivity to a tooth that catches floss.
4. Your Cleaning
Healthy mouths get a gentle routine cleaning. Where we find periodontal disease, we care for it with a deeper cleaning instead, because gum disease involves inflammation below the gumline that a routine cleaning isn’t designed to reach. Either way, the goal is the same: leave with healthier gums than you came in with. It’s also why preventive care is the best financial decision most families can make for their teeth.
5. Review and Plan Together
Finally, we sit down and walk through what we found. We explain it in plain language, using your own 3D scan so you can see what we see. If treatment is needed, we’ll talk through priorities and options and build your plan together.
Exact fees are confirmed in a written treatment plan before any treatment begins. There’s no pressure to decide on the spot. Take the plan home, read it, and ask questions.
When a CBCT 3D Scan Is Part of the Plan
A CBCT scan is a low-dose 3D image of the teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures, and it isn’t part of every first visit. We use it when your plan calls for 3D surgical planning, such as placing dental implants or planning a complex extraction.
Because the imaging is in the studio, planning can happen in one place. Our aim is single-visit planning: diagnose, plan, and start treatment without bouncing between offices.
Bringing the Whole Family
We see the whole family, from children age three and up through parents and grandparents. Children under three are best served by a pediatric dentist, who is set up specifically for the youngest patients. If several family members are coming, let us know everyone’s ages when you get in touch, and we’ll help plan their visits.
Your First Visit Also Gives Back
Through Smiles That Serve, the studio gives 5 dollars for every new patient to Southern Cross Service Dogs, a Winter Garden nonprofit that trains service dogs for veterans. It comes out of the practice, never your bill. Our giving back page explains the partnership.
Finding the Studio
